Shmuel Remained Faithful to His Roots

Shmuel Remained Faithful to His Roots

By Shalom Kalfon

About Shemuel we can say that he lives the verse 2,4 from the prophet habakuk:”
…the righteous shall live by his faith”. ."

His faith in Hebrew is אמוּנתו)) EIMUNATO and his art is (אוּמנוּתו) UMANUTO. It’s a play on words that fits so well his personality. Shemuel lives his faith as he lives his art, originality and faithfulness. His faith includes all the gamut of the Jewish Civilization in its colors and richness. His art includes all facets of art with emphasis on mime.

I know him since childhood in Sefrou, (Morocco) where we grew up together and afterwards in Jerusalem where he started his interest in theatre and appeared with different groups. Shemuel was always gifted with great talent, seriousness and originality. I met him again in Paris where he followed steadfastly his vocation by studying with the great masters of his field, the art of mime.

I met him again in New York where he was struggling to forge his personal style in his art. What distinguished him from other artists I know is his faithfulness to our heritage, to his roots. While advancing and progressing in his art, he also followed and deepened his studies in Judaism. He published essays in Kabbalah in a very distinguished and refined literary Hebrew. His essays were published in the Hebrew weekly (הדואר) “Hadoar”, edited and published in New York.

I had the privilege to be present in the opening class in Boulder, Colorado, (USA) in one of his international seminars that he conducts yearly. On this occasion, I was surprised to listen to him reciting in Hebrew with such serenity (אלוהי נשׁמה) “Elohai Neshamah” from our daily prayer book. This prayer, we recite every morning, to thank The Creator of The Universe for his gift to us, the gift of our pure soul. In this prayer, we express our nothingness and our humility in the face of our short life in this vast universe. It expresses our faith and optimism in the worth of life itself…

Shemuel recited this prayer with such spiritual intensity that all his students-and I among them-were mesmerized, even though they did now understand Hebrew. They were captivated by the spiritual radiance emanated from each and every word that he articulated slowly with his eyes closed.

Shemuel lives his art and his Jewishness with grace and pride. He kept his spiritual and cultural heritage and remained faithful to his roots. This is reflected in his many books, which are a spiritual inspiration to all his many readers, disciples and admirers.

In his books one will find his wisdoms and his outlook on life. His theories enclose the richness and the wisdom from both civilizations in which he is so well rooted. His views are expressed with literary talent and with a deep knowledge of the consciousness philosophy.  He touched upon the problems of our confused and perplexed generation.

To know Shemuel and talking to him, one will learn about the richness of his life experiences and his achievements through consistency and suffering without compromising his integrity as a Jew and as an artist. Throughout his life he remained a faithful friend and a genial and uniquely original human being.
