יש דמויות בחייו של אדם שמלוות אותו לאורך ימי שנותיו. כך היא דמותו של שמואל עבורי. שמואל הוא הנכד ואני הנין של דמות נכבדה העומדת ברקע חיינו—הרב אליהו יעקב אביטבול זצ"ל. מכל בני משפחתי האחרים, שמואל הוא החוט המקשר ביני לבין
אבי סבתי—רחל זצ"ל.
את שמואל הכרתי בהיותי נער בשנות העשרה הראשונות לחיי. דרכינו הצטלבו לראשונה מיד כשעליתי לארץ ישראל והוא בא לביקור. את הקשר בינינו לא היה ניתן אז להביעו במילים. היום, קצת יותר ברורים לי הנימים המקשרים בינינו.
שנינו יונקים מאותם צינורות שפע של אבות דגולים שתורתם הייתה באמת אומנותם. אף כי עסקו במסחר לצורך מחייתם, הם נחרתו בתודעת צאצאיהם כהוגים וכאנשי אמונה דגולים. כזה היה אבי סבתי הרב אליהו אביטבול. לדאבוני לא זכיתי להכירו. אבל זכיתי להתוודע אליו דרך שמואל.
שמואל הוא מממשיכי דרכו של סָבֵנוּ בסגנונו הייחוּדי. שמואל מצא דרך אותנטית להביע רעיונות קוסמיים וקבליים בעזרת שפת הגוף. באמצעות הנפש הוא פילס דרכים אל החוכמה. הוא פיתח דרכים ללמוד וללמד תבונה אלוהית בסגנון אומנותי ובשפה עשירה הקרובה ללב כל בן אנוש באשר הוא, בשלהי המאה העשרים ותחילת המאה העשרים ואחת. שמואל מצא דרך לגעת בנצח דרך הקיום הפיסי העכשווי.
כעתידן, בתחילת המאה העשרים ואחת, אני מוצא עצמי מנסה לגעת באותם רעיונות נצחיים אך מפרספקטיבה של חקר העתיד. שמואל לִימֵּד אותי שצריך לחפש דרכים ייחודיות בכדי לגעת בנצח. הוא העביר לי את המסר מאבותינו שלא לפחד ולהביע את ייחודנו אף במחיר הלעג של קטני המוחין. בטוחני שסבא רבּא נהג כך בתקופתו. כולנו תפילה שנצליח להנחיל את המסר הזה לבנינו ולבנותינו. עבודתו של שמואל תעמוד תמיד כנר, כאות, וכמופת מעל ראשם.

A few words about Samuel and his book “The Invisible Stairway”

There are images in the life of a man that accompany him all his life. That is the image of Samuel for me, Samuel is the grand son and I am the great great son of a great being that was the center of our lives - Rabbi Eliyahu Ya’akov Abitbol peace be with him, and among all my extended family; Samuel was the connecting link that was between me, my father and my grandmother Rachel peace be with her. (My grand mother Rachel is the sister of Samuel’s father R. Moshe Amram Abitbol may peace be with them).
I knew Samuel when I was in my early teens. Our paths met the first time when I immigrated to Israel and he came to visit us. The profound connection that was created then cannot be expressed with words. Today, it is little clearer for me the echoes that connects us.
Both of us drunk from the same channels of great ancestors that their learning was their art of being. Although they traded in commerce to make a living, their heritage and tradition was invested within our souls as great human beings with great faith and connection with the source of life. This was a man who was the father of my grand mother the great sage Eliyahu Ya’akov Abitbol, to my chagrin I did not know him, but I was privileged to know him by knowing Samuel.
Samuel is the one who followed the ways of our grand father with his unique style of living and being. Samuel have found an authentic way to express Kabbalistic and cosmic ideas with the medium of the human body. With the soul’s means he pierced many ways to the great wisdom.
He developed new ways to learn and teach the divine wisdom with an artistic style, and with a rich language that is close to the every human heart at the close of the twentieth century and the new twenty-first century. Samuel have found an original way to deeply touch the eternity of our physical and spiritual existence in these times.
As a futurist, in the beginning of the twenty-first century, I find myself trying to touch the same ideas and eternal visions, but from a futuristic research. Samuel taught me that one must find unique ways to touch the eternity with our being, he transmitted to me the message from our ancestors, to not be afraid to express our uniqueness, even with the price of being ridiculed by people without expanded vision.
I am certain that our dear grand father did the same in his time. We are confident to succeed to pass on this message to our offspring. Samuel’s life work contribution will always stand within us as a flame of light and be for us all, as a good omen and a shining example and as a practical miracle within us.

Dr. David Passig is a futurist by vocation, he is the member staff of the University of Bar-Ilan in Israel/ He teaches in the Graduate Dept. of Communication Technologies, and dedicated in futuristic research of the future human societies, to develop new ways to envision various and possible futures. He heads the laboratory of Virtual Reality in the Bar-Ilan University and research the cognitive development with the new advanced technologies.
